I am submitting a nitpick AND testing the concept of using mwForum as a nitpick database, albeit without some of the features that many of you want.  I have to admit, it's pretty terrible, but here goes.

- Each movie title becomes a "New Topic".  BIG Problems: Without locking the creation of New Topics, MNs would have to diligently prevent rogue titles or even inadvertent duplicates from accumulating.  Spelling or format errors in the titles would have to be corrected.  Etc.

- Under each Movie Title topic, a "first level" reply is a new nitpick submission.  BIG Problems: No "template" to force people to use a common format (category, time, summary, etc.).  No easy way to know what is a new nitpick submission without careful counting or numbering or other declaration.

- "Votes" are submitted as REPLIES to the nitpick in question.  "Votes" can be more specific than the old votes, e.g., "needs more detail" can be written as a request for a specific detail.  Problem: What's a vote and what's a comment?  Benefit: Can easily ID rogues and bad voting.

- Refuting, clarifying or supporting Comments on nitpicks are submitted as REPLIES to the nitpick in question, trying to maintain the proper indentation level for followups.  BIG Problems: No template to make it easy for people to know what level (nitpick cf. comment) they are at.  Etc.

- Searching for dupes or prior posts using the mwForum search function is pretty bad.  You can't search specific fields (i.e., "Topic").  If you were to search for the Movie Title (Topic) "Terminator" you would get way too many hits from other parts of the forums.

This is only an experiment.  It is not expected to be workable as is.  If you point out other problems with this approach or have suggestions, please do so in a way that can help to guide the development of something better.

Movie Title: Day for Night (1973) (La Nuit americaine)
Nitpick Submission #1.
Nitpick Category: Technological Fact
Approximate time of Nitpick: 1/3 of the way through
Summary: Hearing aid is reversed.

Detail: Francois Truffaut plays the partially deaf director.  He wears an old style electronic hearing aid around his neck; basically, a small box with a microphone and amplifier connected to a wire and earpiece.  When he uses the telephone, he places the hearing aid pickup on the telephone earpiece so he can hear the other party.  In the scene in question, as he moves the hearing aid and telephone handset back and forth during the conversation, he ends up putting the hearing aid on the telephone MOUTHPIECE and he talks into the earpiece continuing the conversation as if he still hears the other party and they can hear him.  (As amusing as this is to watch, the movie is a serious drama, not a comedy.)

Commenting on my own submission: I have been meaning to post that for a very long time, but haven't been able to re-rent Day for Night to provide better details.  I was going to ask someone to check it out and post it to nitpickers.com anyway (whoever does it can have the credit and "score").  So, here it is, but only with as much detail as I remember.  I don't remember which phone call.  I do remember that the wire from the mouthpiece end of handset ends up pointing "up" as he holds the handset next to his head and speaks into the earpiece.

I requested the addition of "Day for Night" to the movie title list a long time back and it was entered.  I checked very recently and there were still no nitpicks but, using the new nitpickers.com, I couldn't even find a way to submit a nitpick on a movie that, as yet, had zero nitpicks.

Even tho' this "experiment" will likely fail, I at least got this nitpick 'out there'.
